Demetra Association was established in 1997 in Bourgas, Bulgaria. Its main work is focused on the prevention and protection against human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and gender-based violence. Its main mission is to deliver a wide spectrum of social, psychological, legal, educational, rehabilitation and reintegration services to victims, perpetrators and professionals in the area of domestic violence and trafficking which include amongst others design and delivery of specialized training programmes for professional and civil servants, such as police officers, public prosecutors, judges, social workers; delivery of state-delegated social services for women and children; lobbying and advocacy for better legislation; partnerships and networking building; best practices exchange; support to public institutions for better policy making in areas such as social welfare, health, education, culture, sports, employment, human rights, GBV. Demetra is also part of the Alliance for Protection from GBV in Bulgaria.
Currently, Demetra Association manages the following specialized centres as state-delegated social services for women and children:

• Center for prevention of violence and crime – located in Bourgas, operational since 2010

• Crisis center for children and adults – victims of violence and human trafficking – located in Bourgas, operational since 2008

• Crisis center for children – victims of violence, located in Sredetz, operational since 2014

• Shelter for temporary accommodation of human trafficking victims – located in Bourgas, operational since 2016

• Shelter for temporary accommodation of human trafficking victims – located in Sofia, operational since 2017

• Crisis center for children – victims of violence – located in Sofia, operational since 2017

• Sexual assault referral center “Vselena” /Universe/ – located in Bourgas, operational since 2016

• Mobile service – located in Bourgas, operational since 2016
