The APHVF is a non-governmental organisation that was established in 1990, with the aim to prevent domestic violence, provide direct help to people experiencing or exercising domestic violence and to provide shelter and protection to victims of domestic violence. Moreover the Association provides: information and support to battered women through counseling, information and raise awareness to competent authorities and citizens about the social phenomenon of domestic violence and also provides theoretical and practical training to people who are interested in offering their sevices voluntarily. Additionally, APHVF pinpoints shortcomings and weaknesses in legislation and formal procedures and submit suggestions to the related national services in order to undertake correctional measures and develop a wider policy of domestic violence.
More specifically the Association’s activities include:

• Support and protection to victims of domestic violence
Support is provided to the victims of domestic violence through our free helpline 1440, 24/7.
Crisis counselling, information about other services relevant to the issue of domestic violence, information on basic rights are provided through the helpline.
Free counselling sessions are also offered by Psychologists and Psychotherapists.
Free shelter is provided to women victims of domestic violence and their children.

• Work with perpetrators of domestic violence
Individual counselling sessions are offered to perpetrators of domestic violence.
Information and guidance to perpetrators is offered also through the helpline 1440.
APHVF is in the process of establishing a Perpetrators’ Programme in 2019.

• Prevention of domestic violence
Educational seminars are provided to the public on the phenomenon of domestic violence, along with information regarding the available relevant services in Cyprus. The trainers consist of staff members of APHVF, police officers, psychologists, social workers, lawyers and academic researchers.
